Admission is free.
What is going on in the brain during a creative process? The neurophysiologist, painter and sculptor Erwin-Josef Speckmann combines findings from brain research and artistic practice by looking at the processes in the human brain during the contemplation and creation of art. One thing is certain: a significant aspect is that the brain (and thus the ego) is aware of itself. This is a characteristic feature of human perception, to which Taslima Ahmed also refers in her current exhibition "Canvas Automata" when she compares it to computer vision.
The lecture will be held in german.
With "Westfälische Küche - Thekengespräche" we are presenting our new event format designed by members of the Westfälischer Kunstverein!
We're moving the conversation from the kitchen to the bar - because that's still the best place to chat over a cold drink. Together with our guest, we will stand behind the bar, serve you drinks and look forward to relaxed conversations in our usual unconventional setting.
We look forward to seeing you!
Organised by Jana Bernhardt, Helena Düsing, Marijke Lukowicz, Jana Peplau and Elena Winkler.

What is there to see when we look at art? And what is it about?
In his essays, which are as elegant as they are opinionated, the Belgian philosopher and theorist Bart Verschaffel devotes himself to an inventive range of topics relating to contemporary art: from laughter and the grotesque, to the work of art as a gift, to the modern concept of beauty, and finally to the relationship between architecture and sculpture. This led to an exchange between the theorist and the artist Suchan Kinoshita, whose exhibition Architektonische Psychodramen is currently on show at the Westfälischer Kunstverein.
Bart Verschaffel (b 1956) philosopher, is emeritus professor at Ghent University (Belgium), where he taught Theory of Architecture and Architectural Criticism. He publishes in the fields of architectural theory, aesthetics, visual arts and cultural philosophy. His latest publications – also translated into English – include Mock Humanity! Two Essays on James Ensor’s Grotesques (2018); What is True, What is Real? Picturing Figures and Faces (2021) and the compilation What Artistry Can do. Essays on Art and Beauty (2022).
Verschaffel is the director of the VANDENHOVE Centre for Architecture & Art at Ghent University, where he is the curator of the Charles Vandenhove art collection.
