As self-evidently different as Michael Part (b.1979, AT) and Artie Vierkant’s (b. 1986, US) artistic positions are, the more their ghostly relationship to photography unites them, precisely without necessarily binding them to its original intentions. Part focuses upon photography’s origins and roots in chemistry by experimenting with customised developer based on traditional formulas, effectively creating scope for alchemy and chance within what has now become a highly technical discipline. By contrast, Vierkant has devoted himself to the future of photography, questioning its potential and intrinsic value in a rapidly changing, global art world that is increasingly channelling the way we experience exhibitions and artworks into the virtual sphere. Such a confrontation between these artists, inspired as they are by photography and yet occupying such contrasting, divergent positions, is geared towards reflection upon the historical and future remit of photography and precisely to use its technological essence as a key to a better understanding of these developments and their social consequences.
