The exhibition Chapter 3 by the French artist Ève Gabriel Chabanon (b. 1989, lives and works in Brussels) provides an insight into their long-term discursive, performative project that revolves around the economic category of surplus, which they began in 2016 and titled The Surplus of the non-producer.

In the shape of her concept of the non-producer, Chabanon takes up the kind of (unproductive) work that, according to a Marxist understanding, doesn’t produce surplus value. In particular, this includes artists, (art and) craftspeople and other cultural workers who find themselves in exile due to migration and encounter difficulties in pursuing their profession. In 2016, Chabanon began working with some »non-producers« from the region around Paris, with whom they set up a kind of collaborative »think tank« geared towards a transcultural exchange of knowledge and skills as well as the development of a community. Ève Gabriel Chabanon has developed a spatial installation and fragments of a video work from this collaborative process. The exhibition thus marks an intermediate step, a breathing space and a taking stock or site analysis of such a protracted and intensive project. Central to the project’s thematic arc is the value of an individual’s (usually increasingly non-material) work in a familiar – one's own – and/or alien cultural landscape.

The exhibition "Le Surplus" at Bétonsalon - Centre d’art et de recherche in Paris was shown from January 29 to (planned) April 25, 2020. It was closed early due to measures to combat the spread of the corona pandemic.

Chapter 3 at Westfälischer Kunstverein is Ève Gabriel Chabanon’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.

The artist has produced a series of 100 ceramic mugs that are on sale during the opening hours of the exhibition.

Ceramics "Surplus" | 100 mugs

For the exhibition at Westfälischer Kunstverein, Ève Gabriel Chabanon has handmade 100 ceramic mugs from glazed stoneware and underglaze pigment. On the one hand, these mugs are art objects in the exhibition space, but at the same time they are also objects for sale that visitors can buy. During the exhibition, Ève Gabriel Chabanon replays the sales process, while subjecting it to new rules. The price of the pieces goes up in proportion to their destocking, according to an exponential curve drawn by Sophie Cras, senior lecturer in art history and economics graduate. If the first mug is put on sale at its cost price of € 20, the prices of the following mugs rise slowly at first, then accelerate to reach prices that are those of works of art. This approach, which points out the absurdity of a system of values, joins and prolongs Chabanon’s artistic questioning economic processes on a personal and global scale.

The mugs are available for sale until the end of the exhibition (4 October 2020), during the opening hours of Westfälischer Kunstverein. Payments in cash only. Each mug is unique, the buyers receive a certificate. The proceeds go entirely to the artist.
