In an epic installation encompassing the entire exhibition space, Westfälischer Kunstverein is premiering work by the Tunisian-Swiss sculptor Sonia Kacem (b. 1985), which features the outcome of her research as part of a six-month artist residency in Cairo.
Kacem’s sculptural practice is determined by a sensitive examination of her materials, which she lifts from different stages of our everyday cycle of consumption. She makes process-oriented sculptural stagings that open up an expansive, multifaceted and associative dynamic that focuses on both the cultural manifestation and usage of these materials. Based on her art research in Egypt, Kacem is currently interested in the network of relationships between the body, physical and virtual space – with regard to the varying degrees of freedom and regimentation that inhabit these relationships. Which rules and codes apply in public space; which individual freedoms are only granted in private or in virtual space? How does a personal desire to express oneself manifest itself within these occasionally strict regulatory parameters?
The exhibition is supported by Kunststiftung NRW and Pro Helvetia, Swiss arts council.
Supported by a generous material donation by Schmitz Textiles GmbH + Co. KG, Emsdetten.
