Trained as a painter, Taslima Ahmed (b. 1982 in Liverpool, UK) is well aware of this ancient cultural technique’s variable nature reflecting contemporary developments and thus periodically regenerating itself. Currently, our perception of the world and its representation in art is being heavily influenced by digital technologies, AI, and algorithms that attempt to imitate human vision and creative work. This is where Ahmed comes in, using AI, methods of digital image production and printing techniques to reconstruct the illusion of analogue painting. Based on media-theoretical considerations as well as references to the history of painting, she creates images specifically to explore the limits of these technologies and to prove the uniqueness of human perception. This is not least an emancipatory gesture towards a tradition of painting, including the burden of constant innovation, as well as towards the ever-increasing influence of digital technologies.
