As part of the RADAR project, Heiko Schäfer (b.1983) premieres his new photography series "Die Arbeit in und an Aufmachungen (The Work in and on Processing), which he researched and photographed over a number of months in two inkle weaving mills in Wuppertal – or "Little Manchester" as continental Europe's first industrial city was described circa1850 in an encyclopaedia.

The framed gelatin silver prints on the walls and numerous illustrations in the catalogue on the table in the exhibition room show workers in the so-called "processing" shop, the term used to describe the department responsible for what happens after the weaving process in the overall production chain of the textile industry. It is here that the inkle bands are inspected (by eye / touch), rolled and, if necessary, cut. Schäfer not only documents these individual procedures with a great deal of precision, mostly from an elevated position, but he also examines the workers' interactions. The series focuses on the relationship between the individual components: worker / machine / material, as well as the actual structure of the labour and production process itself. Not only does "labour" (and "surplus labour") recur in the titles of Schäfer's photographs, it is also treated thematically, as he serially juxtaposes the photographic production process with the industrial production process.

Heiko Schäfer studied under Christopher Williams at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf till 2017.

Curated by Jenni Henke and Kristina Scepanski.

RADAR is an exhibition format devised by the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and Westfälischer Kunstverein. Its aim is to showcase young, less well-known artists whose striking work puts them on the "radar". The works on show provide a glimpse into the work currently being undertaken by the featured artists.
